Time Out is looking for a brilliant, über-creative and collaborative senior designer to join our growing design department and help us make our digital output stand out from the pack. The role is based in New York, but will work on our editorial and social design output for our key cities in North America (Miami, Boston, Chicago, Montreal, LA and NYC). Our approach to design is fun, creative, inspiring and irreverent, and the work we do plays a key role in defining the Time Out brand globally. We don’t take ourselves too seriously but we do create seriously good work.
You are a self starter, with a meticulous eye for detail and versatile in your skillset. You are keen to get stuck into a multitude of projects and will be able to manage your time to prioritise tasks. You’ll have great instincts and will consistently come up with cool, clever and fun design executions that are lightning-fast, while also respecting wider brand guidelines and needs. A passion for and understanding of some of the areas Time Out loves and celebrates – culture, music, food, drink, city living and travel – is essential for being able to fully contribute to the team. All the standard software basics apply – InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator (After Effects is a strong plus). You’ll be an excellent communicator and collaborator.
As well as being a natural team player, you will also have experience of art directing shoots and be able to organise and lead people. You’ll have the confidence, tenacity and overall presence to command respect on a set and won’t think twice about putting a maverick PR or stylist in their place if you need to. In a nice way of course. Pinpoint precision and stopping at nothing to get the cover shot is an absolute must. Overall though you’ll be a collaborative, kind, can-do creative, who will leave their ego at the door, roll their sleeves up and get stuck in to help the team consistently create amazing work.
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with the social team and editors to create slick, fun and engaging designs for our social channels that will maximize Time Out’s reach and engagement
- Work with the social and video team to create motion graphics and animation work
- Create quick online assets to support news stories and features on the various US Time Out city websites.
- Work closely with the design director and photo editor to organise and execute photoshoots and bring mind-blowing ideas to life.
- Regularly commission illustrators (strong and evolving knowledge of who are the best in the business is vital for this)
- Regularly help out editors by sourcing and selecting engaging stock photography that will bring their stories to life
Experience
- 5 years+ working in an editorial design department
- Experience creating assets for social is essential
- Experience working on photoshoots and working with photographers, stylists etc
- Animation and motion graphic skills would be nice
- A basic knowledge of editing video is a bonus
- Knowledge of photographers in other US cities also helpful
