Role Overview
We are seeking an excellent editor, writer and curator immersed in L.A.’s local culture who has strong experience in a digital media environment. The ideal candidate has a deep familiarity with L.A.’s events scene and local landmarks and is bursting with ideas on developing new stories and growing our audience.
The focus of the job will be primarily on what’s exciting and new or tried and true in L.A.’s vast cultural scene, as well as producing service-focused digital listicles and larger attractions-related features. The Things to Do Editor oversees the publication’s events calendars and regularly contributes to the site’s feed of timely news stories and video posts. At Time Out, we broadly define a “thing to do” as anything that gets Angelenos out and about and exploring their city; this can also often include music, film, theater and comedy events, though usually not restaurants and bars, which are covered by a separate role on staff.
Responsibilities
Plan, write, commission, edit and proof all Things to Do content (features, listings, news, etc.) across digital and social.
Have your finger on the pulse of L.A.’s events, nightlife and cultural scenes, across a range of neighborhoods and price tiers; use your professional contacts and social networks to be the first to identify the next big thing.
Maintain weekly and monthly events calendars and event listings.
Compose a biweekly email newsletter.
Post quick and timely news coverage of developments about L.A. events and openings, as well as in-depth pieces full of firsthand experiences.
Brainstorm ideas for collaborative stories within the L.A. team.
Represent the brand at industry events and in media appearances.
Oversee any expenses, freelancer contracts and invoices for the Things to Do section.
Assist with Things to Do inclusion across social media.
Work with our video team to create successful Things to Do video content.
Qualifications
A passion for and excellent knowledge of destinations in L.A. proper and beyond.
Minimum five years professional consumer content experience in the culture and/or lifestyle sector, with a strong reporting and digital production background.
Familiarity with shooting original photos and videos; editing skills are a plus.
Excellent grasp and understanding of SEO best practices.
Highest standard of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize accordingly.
The ability to write copy in line with the highest editorial standards.
The ability to work quickly to meet tight deadlines under pressure.
A strong industry reputation.
Flexibility and a professional approach at all times.
The ability to self-supervise in order to meet deadlines.
Ability to work in and contribute to a fun and dynamic team-based environment.
Must be educated to degree level or equivalent industry qualifications.
